Tips for How to Draw a Rose
My number one tip for learning how to draw a rose is to start simple and be patient.
Roses are beautiful flowers, but they can seem daunting to draw since they have so many petals. But once you break it down by following these tutorials, you'll realize how simple it can be.
Remember that it's okay if you get frustrated when you're trying to draw a rose for the first time! That happened to me about 20 times when I was first learning.
Here are my top tips for drawing a rose:
- Look at photos of real roses to get an understanding of how the petals usually look and sit.
- Look at a few different styles of rose drawings to decide which style you want to do!
- Start with pencil. This one is crucial, especially if you're a beginner! It leaves you endless room for improvement and erasing.
- Have fun with it and add some color!
It's also super helpful to practice drawing in general – in whatever form that is! It's good to keep the creative juices flowing to get you comfortable with the pen and paper.

4 Styles: How to Draw a Rose Step by Step
1. Round Rose Drawing Tutorial
This cute rose drawing is from the birds-eye-view, so it only features the top of the rose.
This rose doodle is round, with subtle waves in the petals. And it's super simple if you're learning how to draw a rose step by step!
Step 1: Draw a Large Circle and Messy Inner Spiral
To begin this easy rose drawing, draw a large circle. Then, add a messy spiral in the middle.
Don't worry about making the inner spiral look exactly like the example – all roses are different! As long as you draw some kind of spiral, you're good to go!
Step 2: Draw 3 Big Messy Petals
The next step is to draw some large petals. All you have to do is draw 3 wavy shapes around the circle. Reference the example below to help guide you. Remember, plants are never perfectly even – so it's okay if your petals are uneven!
Step 3: Draw a Wavy Line Through Each Large Petal
It's time to add some layers to your new petals. To do this, simply draw one diagonal line through each petal from the previous step.
Step 4: Draw Inner Petals with Wavy Lines
It's time to add more petals to the inside of your rose drawing. To do this, draw wavy lines around the inner spiral. Add as many wavy lines as you want. The more you add, the thicker your rose will be.
Step 5: Add Some Leaves
Next, draw some leaves. This step is optional, but I find the leaves add a really beautiful touch to the rose drawing!
Step 6: Color It In!
Finally, you can color your rose drawing. You can use any material you like, whether it's pencil crayons, markers, or watercolors. And there you have it – a beautiful, easy rose drawing!
2. Rose Bud Drawing Tutorial
This rose doodle is simple, but still elegant. It features a rose from the frontal view, with its green base attached to its bottom.
Step 1: Draw First Two Base Petals
The first step of this elegant rose drawing is to draw two base petals. To do this, draw a curvy U shape. Then, draw wavy lines from each corner of the U shape.
Step 2: Draw Petal Accents
The next step is to draw your petal accents. These are the parts of the rose petals that "fold" outwards.
Simply draw some curvy shapes around the base petals from step 1.
Step 3: Add Inner Spiral
Next, draw the inner spiral of the rose. You can draw the spiral as neatly or messily as you wish – both styles will work for this rose drawing.
Step 4: Draw 3 Petals at the Back
It's time to fill in the back of the rose. Draw 3 wavy petals around the spiral, and connect them to the petal accents from step 2.
Step 5: Add 3 Inner Petals and Spiky Base
You're almost done! Just add some extra petals to the inside of the rose to make it fuller. Then, draw a spiky base around the bottom of the rose.
Step 6: Color It In!
Finally, color in your rose drawing.
3. Round Full Rose Drawing Tutorial
This rose drawing is gorgeous and classic. It's a rose from the birds-eye-view, with some added leaf details.
In this doodle, you can add many layers of inner petals which gives the drawing a detailed look. And it's an easy rose drawing because you are drawing the same shape over and over again, in a circular pattern until your rose is complete.
Step 1: Draw 3 Curved Shapes Forming a Circle
To start this simple rose drawing, draw 3 teardrop shapes. Make sure these shapes are curved so that they form a circle on the inside.
Step 2: Add Inner Petals in Circular Pattern
Next, add more of these curved petal shapes inside the inner circle.
Step 3: Draw Round/Wavy Outer Petals
Next, draw these curved shapes around the petals you've already drawn. I recommend making these outer petals a little more wavy in shape.
Step 4: Draw More Outer Petals with Subtle Pointed Tips
Continue adding outer petals to the rose. The bigger the rose drawing gets, the more petals you'll have to draw around it. I suggest adding slight points to the edges of these final outer petals.
Step 5: Add Some Leaves
Feel free to add some decorative leaves to the rose drawing.
Step 6: Color It In!
The final step is to color in your beautiful new rose drawing!
4. Simple Spiral Rose Drawing Tutorial
This cute rose doodle is simple, but elegant. It has curvy and wavy petals, and is super simple to draw!
Step 1: Draw Inner Spiral
The first step to this easy rose doodle is to draw the inner spiral. Since this is a simple drawing with not as many petals as the previous drawing, make the spiral fairly deep.
(It should look kind of a like a snail shell!)
Step 2: Add 3 Curvy Petals
Next, draw 3 petals around the spiral. To draw these petals, make a curved shape that resembles a butterfly wing.
Step 3: Add More Petals
Next, draw some pointed-edge petals. I recommend drawing 2 layers of these pointed petals, as shown in the example below.
Step 4: Draw Some Leaves
Finally, draw some leaves around the rose.
Step 5: Color It In!
Feel free to color your rose drawing if you want a pop of color.
